The IB offers high quality programmes of international education to a world-wide community of schools. The three programmes for students aged 3 to 19 help develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. The three programmes are:

PYP: The Primary Years Programme (Prep to Grade 5 ).

MYP: The Middle Years Programme (Grade 6 to Grade 10).

6. WHAT ARE TOK, EE AND CAS?

Theory of Knowledge develops a coherent approach to learning that unifies the academic disciplines. In this course on critical thinking, students inquire into the nature of knowing and deepen their understanding of knowledge as a human construction.

The Extended Essay asks students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the DP subjects they are studying. The world studies extended essay option allows students to focus on a topic of global significance which they examine through the lens of at least two DP subjects.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) involves students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies throughout the Diploma Programme. Creativity encourages students to engage in the arts and creative thinking. Action seeks to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Service with the community offers a vehicle for a new learning with academic value. The three strands of CAS enhance students’ personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning and enable journeys of self-discovery.

8. IS THE IB RECOGNIZED IN INDIA AND WORLDWIDE?

The rigour and high standards of the IBDP ensure that colleges and universities around the world recognize the IB Diploma as a superior academic programme and a strong university-entry credential.

The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) rates the IB Diploma as equivalent to Class 12 CBSE, ICSE, NIOS or State Boards. Many educational institutions and colleges have published their policies and entry criteria for IB students on their websites. For example, Delhi University colleges have specified their conditions for entry of IB students. The information is also available on the IB website: www.ibo.org.

Universities in most of the countries recognize the IB Diploma and it allows entrance to the most competitive universities around the world. University admission authorities recognize the academic rigor of the IBDP, and value the parts of the Diploma such as TOK, CAS and the Extended Essay.

Successful IB Diploma students may be offered credit (particularly for Higher Level courses and TOK) for first year university courses in US and Canadian Universities overseas.

9. WHY SHOULD I SELECT IB FOR MY CHILD?

The IB Diploma has earned universal reputation for rigorous assessment, giving students access to the top colleges and universities in India and the world. IB is fast becoming the programme of choice for Indian students preparing to pursue higher education abroad.

The IB curriculum equips students with the tools needed to succeed in higher education, such as self-confidence, preparedness, research skills, organizational skills and being actively engaged in self-learning.

10. SOME UNIVERSITIES EVEN OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS TO IB DIPLOMA HOLDERS?

University admissions around the world are getting competitive by the day. Admission officers are increasingly looking for other evidence that a student will succeed in the university - such as exposure to quality curriculum, research abilities, an international outlook and social service – all enhanced by the IBDP.

The sports facilities available are varied and numerous, so there should be something to suit everyone. Nearly all of the activities are open to both sexes and many run all the year round. In addition excursions, Student exchange program, DPSGMUN and trekking expeditions are organised.

12. HOW IS THE IB CURRICULUM REVIEWED AND MAINTAINED?

Any school, or group of schools, wishing to offer one or more International Baccalaureate programmes as an IB World School must first be authorized. The requirements are the same for all schools, and the procedure is designed to ensure that schools are well prepared to implement the programme(s) successfully. All IB World Schools are required to participate in an ongoing process of review and development, using the same programme standards and practices.

As part of its ongoing commitment to the development of a highly skilled global learning community, the IB provides a wide range of high-quality professional development opportunities to help new, experienced and expert school leaders and educators understand, support, and successfully deliver IB programmes reflecting IB standards and practices.

All subjects are subject to a seven-year curriculum review process. This process is not fixed and if significant change occurs in a body of knowledge, for example, computer science, then changes will be introduced more quickly.

The cycle allows for:

  • Worldwide research by curriculum personnel
  • Design of curriculum models through consultation with practitioners in IB World Schools
  • Presentation of draft documents to the Diploma Programme committee and IB World Schools
  • Analysis of feedback before final publishing, training of teachers and then teaching and examining of the new curriculum.
  • At the end of the two-year programme, students are assessed both internally and externally in ways that measure individual performance against stated objectives for each subject.

13. HOW ARE IB STUDENTS ASSESSED IN THE IBDP?

Students take written examinations at the end of the programme, which are marked by external IB examiners. Students also complete assessment tasks in the school, which are either initially marked by teachers and then moderated by external moderators or sent directly to external examiners.

The marks awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). Students can also be awarded up to three additional points for their combined results on theory of knowledge and the extended essay. The diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points, subject to certain minimum levels of performance across the whole programme and to satisfactory participation in the creativity, action, service requirement. The highest total that a Diploma Programme student can be awarded is 45 points.

Assessment is criterion-related, which means student performance is measured against pre-specified assessment criteria based on the aims and objectives of each subject curriculum, rather than the performance of other students taking the same examinations. The range of scores that students have attained remains statistically stable, and universities value the rigour and consistency of Diploma Programme assessment practice.

14. WHEN ARE THE IB EXAMS TAKEN?

The IB exams are taken in May of the second year of the programme.

15. IS THE IBDP DIFFICULT FOR STUDENTS?

The IB is designed as a model of holistic education for the mid-range student and above. Statistically speaking, most students who earn the IB Diploma worldwide were of average or above average ability. It is not a programme designed only for geniuses. What the IB programme requires students to have are a strong work ethic, good time-management and solid study skills. The IB Diploma programme offers courses at different levels (Higher Level and Standard Level). In addition, language courses range from introductory level to native-speaker level.

16. CAREER GUIDANCE.

The goal of the College/Career Guidance Department is to provide assistance to each student as they prepare for post-secondary studies around the world. The department aims to provide students with all the available and relevant data on which to base a decision to apply and/or attend a specific college or university. The career guidance department will also prepare transcripts, school profiles and teacher recommendations, which will promote the student’s candidacy by highlighting known skills, achievements and potential.

17. WHAT CRITERIA DO UNIVERSITIES USE FOR GIVING COLLEGE CREDIT TO IB CLASSES OR FOR RECOGNIZING THE IB DIPLOMA?

The criteria vary from one university to another and from one country to another. Generally, Universities give credit to higher level subjects with grades (5-7) and up to one year college credit for a good IB diploma score.

Due to the fact that the requirements of individual universities or countries are constantly changing, we advise students and their parents to verify the university/country requirements prior to initiating the IB Programme. The IB website provides a searchable database of countries and their recognition policies. It is strongly recommended that parents contact the universities directly to verify that the information is up to date. Visit the International Baccalaureate website (http://www.ibo.org) for more details.

18. IS THE IBDP STRESSFUL?

The IB programme is a rigorous two-year programme. The level of stress can vary from one student to another and can be reduced, depending on the student’s acquisition of healthy study and organizational skills. A student who procrastinates and does not know how to manage time effectively will find it difficult to reduce the stress. All students are encouraged to complete assignments on time and meet the internal assessment deadlines. The teachers at DPSG also work hard to coordinate major test and assignment deadlines, to keep student-stress to a minimum.
