IB Primary Year Programme

IB Mission statement

The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

PYP is a holistic programme where learners are actively engaged and take ownership of their learning. It places learner at the nucleus by making learning more contextual, joyful and experiential. IB recognizes that learners are individuals who are imaginative, creative, resourceful and have a perceptive of their own and make sense of the world around them through the experiences they live. The classroom is thus a place that provides such stimulating experiences and provocations so that learners can think deeply and construct meaning of their own learning. Through these experiences, we aim to develop the learners holistically in all the domains such as social, cognitive, psychomotor, language and critical thinking skills. These experiences are indeed a way to provide scaffolding to move from concrete to abstract, from known to unknown seamlessly.

Essential Elements of the PYP

1.Knowledge: What all want our learners to KNOW?

2.Key Concepts: What we want our learners to UNDERSTAND?

3.Attitudes: What we want our learners to SHOW?

4.Approaches to learning: What do we want our learners to USE

(the skills)?

5.Action: What do we want our learners DO?

Play, has an integral part in the IB curriculum especially in the early years. Through play, the children learn to express themselves more meaningfully. They create games that gives us a glimpse into their world of understanding and helps them hone their skills and competencies. Through the use of multiple senses, learning becomes effortless and joyous.

The experiences of PYP culminates in collaborative inquiry which is also called the PYP Exhibition. Learners are encouraged to synthesize their knowledge and share it with the whole school community. It provides an opportunity to exhibit all the learner Profiles that they have developed through their engagement with the experiences in PYP. True to the essence, it enables the learners to investigate some real-life global issues and work out possible solutions.

In an everchanging world where the challenges are unforeseen, it is but natural to prepare learners who can make informed choices and act at the same time being more accepting and having the ability to solve problems collaboratively. We aim to weave learning in transdisciplinary manner where the learning transcends subject boundaries and learners can apply it to their real-life situation since life cannot be compartmentalized into subjects. Our intent is to create safe and conducive learning spaces and take learning beyond the walls of the classroom so that DPSGites become learners for life.
