Exams can seem intimidating and overwhelming to biology students. The key to overcoming these obstacles is preparation. By learning how to study for biology exams you can conquer your fears.
Here are few tips and easy tricks for Biology Examination, which will help you score 70/70.
- Time Management.
Create a study schedule giving time and focus on scoring units and chapters you are weak in. - Focus.
On the NCERT books along with the use of reference books for clearing your doubts and mastering key concepts. - Time yourself.
Pre-plan your time allocation to sections. - Draw diagrams/pictorial representation.
Wherever necessary or there is scope to improve your concept visibility to the examiner. - Keep in mind.
To mention the answer numbers neatly and in a legible manner. - It is important.
To attend long question with a good introduction, diagrams/flowcharts and proper conclusion which can help you score big and easily by focusing on one particular question. - Avoid using abbreviations /SMS languages for answering the questions.
- Refrain attempting section in fragments!
- Do not jumble up the sections.
- To break the monotony, occasionally study with friends by each explaining a topic to others.
- Attempt sample papers/practice papers to identify trends and to know your weak areas for mastering them.
- Remember to go through the text as often as possible, not trying to memorize it but trying to understand the processes/concepts.
- As the exam approaches, practice 1 sample paper per day writing complete answers.
- If time permits consider one final revision before you submit your answer paper for grading.

Syllabus: Following is the weight-age of the units in Biology
Notes, Diagrams or Flashcards
Not only does it help in the process of remembering the terms while writing, it will also help in the last minute preparation strategies. This subject is heavy on theory so to facilitate consistent interest, it is useful to draw diagrams and to base the preparation structure around them. Repeated practice of drawing diagrams can help drawing them neatly and in shorter duration.
Make point-wise summaries in your own words for important topics:
– Use flashcards to remember definition
– Create flowcharts to effectively remember processes
Biology paper with section A to E should have different strategies to attempt
Section A:
The short answer in between the lines and understanding based. Need to be thorough with the book to score readily full 5 marks here!
Section B:
2 markers, usually feature repeated questions from previous year papers. Thoroughly practice the last 10 years’ papers to increase your scoring chances in this section.
Section C:
Knowledge, memory, and application based. Whenever studying any technique, prepare it for 3 markers as an application based. Having subparts here, you might get definition and differences being asked in this part.
Section D:
Value-based.
Section E:
The long question should attempt the questions with more subparts, to minimize losing marks in this section.
The single question with parts and subparts is asked from a single chapter, so prepare well for 5 markers based on weight-age of the syllabus.
Intelligent choice has to be made in choosing a question for 5 markers as you will have 6 question out of which only 3 needs to be attempted.
