The widespread outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has led to the adoption of online teaching mode by most schools, colleges and coaching institutions. All of them have now switched from the traditional classroom setting to providing daily lectures with the help of online classes. During this outbreak, online classes have come as a real support for students and teachers who have adapted well to the new platform and are able to maintain the academic rigor.
Considering the entire situation holistically, one may observe that there are many pros and cons of online learning. On one hand, the virtual platform offers ample opportunities to make classrooms more interesting and interactive, on the other, long hours of online screen exposure has a detrimental impact on our eyes and this cannot be avoided completely.
So here are some important tips to reduce the discomfort caused to the eyes due to online studies.
LAPTOP/PC INSTEAD OF SMALLER SCREENS
The first thing which students should follow is that they should avoid using mobile phones for online studies. Students are advised to use a larger screen like laptops, computers or tablets as it is useful in reducing eye strain.
SCREEN – BRIGHTNESS
Students should adjust the brightness of their laptop or tablet screens .to reduce eye strain. They must turn down the brightness of the screen and turn on the contrast for better viewing. These adjustments can be done through the settings on the device.
ADJUSTING LIGHTING
Along with adjusting the brightness on the device, students should also make sure that the lightning of the room is adequate. The original light in the room should be dimmer than the brightness of the gadget. Warm lighting is best suited as it reduces the discomfort caused to the eyes.
SCREEN EXPOSURE
Twenty minutes into a lecture, instead of fixing the gaze continuously on the screen, students may take time off ,for a short duration of 20 seconds and look at something placed 20 feet (6 m) away. This practice will reduce the pressure on the eyes and offer relief.
BLINKING OF EYES
On average, a human blinks 12-14 times per minute. However, when engrossed in reading, watching online lectures, or using the screen of any gadget, the rate of blinking decreases tremendously, resulting in watery, red, and itchy eyes. Try to be conscious of your blinking while you work and do it more often. Blinking at the rate of 20 times per minute would be good.
ONLINE GAMES
As the students use electronic devices all day,it is but prudent to avoid playing online games as the eyes feel the exertion. They should opt for alternate recreational activities like dancing, painting, singing etc.
POSTURE
Students should try to sit in a proper ergonomic position. Incorrect posture can lead to headache, neck ache, and backache. Their posture should be accurate, their back should be straight, and shoulders should be relaxed. Students can also use neck pillows if they are facing problem with the neck. Moreover, students should also keep their computer screens clean and at 20” – 40”.
MASSAGE
Usually, E-Gadgets like Laptops, I-Pads, and Mobile phones are kept close to the eyes and children are engrossed in them for hours resulting in stretching of eye muscles. For relaxation of eye muscles massaging can be beneficial as it generates warmth and gives a soothing effect to eyes.
PROPER REST AND HEALTHY DIET
Along with the above-mentioned tips to reduce strain, students should also take proper rest and sleep. They should give their body and eyes proper rest. Moreover, a balanced and healthy diet rich in minerals and vitamins which are essential for the growth of the brain and the body is essential.
Hope all these tips will help our students to take the best care of their eyes during this era of Online classes.
