There is much more to education than simply reading books, taking tests and getting good grades. There is something called character, and it is very much related to the type of individual you wish to produce as an educated person.
This refers to developing students a set of skills, including how to think, act, and make decisions. At this point in time, when everything around us is changing so rapidly, it is imperative that children have the tools of a solid, moral and Value-Based education. And that is exactly what I will discuss here.
What is Value-Based Education?
Let me define this term before continuing. Value-based education emphasises teaching students’ basic ethical concepts such as honesty, respect, caring for others, responsibility, and integrity.
We do not teach ethics as separate subject areas, i.e., honesty and dishonesty. Instead, we promote the concept of practising ethics every single day.
Importance of Moral Education in Today’s World
As a result of the numerous external influences our young people experience today, including digital media, peer pressure, and social expectations, without a strong base in moral values, it can be very challenging for young people to make the right decisions in many situations.
Therefore, the influence of moral values in students' lives is directly related to making good behaviour choices. The moral values in students' lives assist students to:
- Distinguish right from wrong
- Make responsible choices
- Develop Respect for other people
- Take responsibility for themselves
Knowledge gained in the classroom can help students achieve academic success. However, if students develop strong moral values during their educational years, they will be able to achieve success in ways that benefit both themselves and society.
Why is Value Education in Schools Necessary?
Schools are not just places for students to acquire knowledge. Schools are also environments that form attitudes, behaviours, and personalities. The value of education in schools is crucial because students spend a significant part of their day there. Through structured guidance, schools help students:

There is a great deal of confusion between discipline and rules. Discipline refers to self-control, the ability to control one's actions and thoughts. A student develops discipline through the school's value education program. Students learn to:

Students develop internal discipline that enables them to follow rules without being forced to do so.
Value Education and Future Success
Success is not only measured by marks or achievements. Character plays a major role. The importance of moral values in students' lives extends into future careers. Employers, communities, and society value individuals who are:

- Reliable
The foundation of these qualities begins with value-based education. Students carry these values into adulthood.
Creating a Value-Oriented School Environment
Environment matters. Schools that prioritise value education foster a culture where values are visible. This includes:

While there is obvious importance placed upon educating children with good values, it can sometimes be quite difficult for parents and educators alike to accomplish this task. Challenges include:

Despite this, consistent effort makes a difference. The importance of moral education lies in persistence. Values develop over time.
