Teachers have the power to motivate their students. They have the full control of getting attention from their students. Teachers are the key influencers of any student’s life. Think about of the teacher whose wise words and way of teaching simply changed you. You became more aware of your classes. As an individual, you became keener to the lessons taught in the classes.
Ever wondered what and how you felt so motivated, out of nowhere?
It is the teacher(s) who helped you so much. S/he could be your parent or a school/college teacher. But they really helped you to pull yourself together and find yourself resourceful to learn new things in life in the most fun and attractive way.
As a teacher how to motivate students
There is one thing we all know about the students is that they lack in paying attention to the class during the lessons. This is more frequent during the commencement of a new session.
Being a teacher is not an easy job. You have to take a class of 30-40 students. Pay attention to each of the children, see the child is learning something in the class. If you find the child mentally not present then you have to make sure you keep the class as interesting as it can get. Every class has to be different from the previous ones. If it is not, then the students might lose the charm of paying attention.
How to motivate students in the classroom or in the school
– Praise your students
It is very important to recognize work in the class. Displaying good work in the classroom and sending positive notes to the parents about your student only helps them attain confidence in you. Hold a weekly award ceremony in the class or organize a small affair to honor your student on showing their sheer hard work on any of the classroom projects.
– Expect excellence
Set high but absolutely realistic expectation from your students. Make sure to speak about your expectations to them. Set short and long term goals for them to achieve and make very sure they are attainable. Later when they achieve those goals, celebrate!
– Spread energy
You are a teacher and they must look up to you. They must feel your presence when you walk into the room. Your aura binds the class together. Show your energy in a level, students should be beaming with enthusiasm about learning a new lesson today. Spread your energy like a virus. It should be contagious and should in effect in your next class as well.
– Mix your methods
One of the classic concepts of teaching method is to always mix up your ideas. Use a variety of teaching method to teach new lessons or revise the old ones. It always works. By doing this, you will also maintain an order in the class. Start your class with a general chit chat, talk about previous class, take 10 minutes to open with a new lesson and 15 minutes to introduce the actual concept and then use the remaining time with Q and A with them. This makes it easy for them and you to have a one to one conversation and makes the class much more interactive.
– Assign them job
Create a job list for the class for a week. Let your students pick their role in their own way based on their interest and skills. Prepare a calendar. Keep it as basic and standard for them to perform the job role in the most creative way. Roles could be an attendance officer, classroom cleanliness monitor, health and hygiene inspector, discipline in-charge, assignment submission monitor, and so on. This will help them learn to be more responsible and understand the role of having some control and ownership of a class as an individual and as a team.
– Student’s lives lessons
Roll a dice and pick a student of the day and share a lesson related to that student’s life. It could be any given thing. It could be a life lesson, or a short story about how they overcame their fear about something, or share their joyous or the proudest moment. Keep it light and interesting. It only motivates other students to come forward and share their experiences. A growing child learns more about life when they see or hear a life lesson from their fellow classmates or friends.
