How Can a Teacher Spot Bullying and Stop It?

Bullying is undesired, aggressive tendencies among school-going children which involves a real or imagined power imbalance. It is done in repeatedly again and again, over time. Students who are bullied and the students who bully others can have serious psychological problems. It involves actions such as spreading rumors, giving threats, to attack someone either verbally or physically, and excluding them from friends’ group intentionally.

Symptoms of Bullying

A teacher can closely diagnose the symptoms of bullying as the child who is being bullied by early signs of caution such as sudden falling grades, low self-esteem level, unexplained injuries and pains, withdrawal from social gatherings and friends, feeling helplessness etc. Children mostly exhibit warning signs like self-devastation and unwillingness to go to school.

Who is the target point of bullying?

Over the times, a pattern has been observed in the students who are most vulnerable to bullying. Often kids who are new to the school, or children who use hearing/auditory aids, are going through weight issues or the kids who find it difficult to blend with the crowd are at the highest risk level.

New time, new ways

In the new times, cyberbullying has become very common. It takes place over digital devices like computer, tablet or phone. It includes receiving, sharing and posting harmful and sometimes negative personal information about somebody. Students, facing cyberbullying, show sudden use/disuse of electronic gadgets. They have a tendency of covering the screen of the device and refuse to even share it.

How can teachers help?

Teachers should quickly and consistently respond to bullying. They must at any cost make their students understand that bullying is not acceptable. As a teacher, knowledge of Anti-Bullying Act like POCSO and Cyber Safety Act equip the teacher in better handling of the situation.

How can the school take a charge against bullying?

School staff has a significant role to play in eradicating bullying.

  • The schools should launch anti-bullying campaign and create a helpline no.
  • Teachers should inform about child helpline no 1098.
  • Installation of CCTV cameras should be installed in every nook of the school.
  • A zero-tolerance policy should be framed with strict reprimands.
  • The school should provide positive behavior interventions and support in socio-economic skill development.
  • Parents should always be kept in the loop and apprised of each action.

Not every problem has a solution but bullying has. A close partnership between parents and school can effectively deal with this grave issue. A child whether he is bullying or is being bullied, needs care, affection, and attention. Counseling at the right time can nip this problem in the bud.
