Disadvantages of Current Education System

These were the words of Neil Armstrong when he set his foot on the moon. The remarkable progress of human civilization is the result of the inquisitive mind which is always curious to venture and explore the unknown domains of this civilization.

According to Albert Einstein,
“Education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think”.

To keep up with the dynamics of the rapidly changing society, affected by globalization, migration, international competition and changing market trends young minds needs to be continuously updated. Education systems need to promote a variety of skills and accomplishments in their students including both academic achievement and the development of broader competencies, such as creativity, adaptability, and global awareness.

The current education system, however, is yet to realize its goals. There is a lack of coordination between the learning outcomes and the job requirement. Problems of low-quality education and outdated curriculum have become more pronounced with automation and emerging technology reshaping businesses. There is lack of suitable workforce in every profession. Evaluation system at the school and the college level are based traditional pen-paper tests. There is no system available to measure the soft skills of an individual which is now a major criterion for success.

Education is still looked upon as a means to get a job with attractive pay packets. This mindset is a silent killer of the creativity and inquisitiveness and is a source of unrest amongst today’s youth.

Our education system does not address the need for a healthy body and mind. Rigorous admission procedures are depriving students of physical exercise. Technology has overpowered the importance of playing games. There is a flood of coaching institutions offering to train the students to crack the entrance examinations most of which aims to eliminate rather than select the deserved ones.  Cultural and social obligations have taken a back seat leading to degradation of moral values.
