From Familiar to New: Discovering India Through Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat

India’s strength lies in the remarkable diversity of its people and places. From one region to another, languages change, traditions evolve, cuisines take different forms and communities carry distinct histories and ways of life. Yet these varied experiences are woven into a shared national identity. Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat (EBSB) seeks to deepen this connection by encouraging people to discover, engage with and learn from the diversity around them.
Launched by the Government of India on Ekta Diwas, 31st October 2015, EBSB campaign promotes sustained interaction between States and Union Territories, with a focus on cultural and educational exchange. Language, literature, music, food, tourism, sports, traditions and local practices become avenues through which young people can understand India beyond their immediate surroundings.
This vision resonates deeply with the educational philosophy of DPSG Dehradun, where learning is designed to be experiential, engaging and connected to real life. We believe that education becomes more meaningful when children are encouraged to experience ideas rather than simply encounter them within the pages of a textbook.
At DPSG Dehradun, the Educational Experiential Learning Journey brings this philosophy to life for students of Grades 6 to 12. By travelling to different parts of the country, students encounter new environments, communities and cultural practices, gaining an understanding of India through direct experience.
A journey can turn a historical lesson into an experience at a heritage site, transform geographical concepts through changing terrains, introduce students to the rhythm of unfamiliar languages and dialects, and reveal the stories behind local food, crafts, music and traditions. These encounters encourage learners to look beyond what they already know and approach unfamiliar experiences with curiosity and openness.
The value of such journeys extends beyond what students see and experience. They learn to observe, communicate, adapt, collaborate and listen. They encounter perspectives shaped by different environments and histories, and in doing so, develop a deeper appreciation of the many identities that coexist within India.
This is where the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat finds a natural place in education. EBSB connects classroom knowledge with culture, interaction and experience, helping students understand that diversity is not simply something to learn about, it is something to engage with.
For us at DPSG Dehradun, the Educational Experiential Learning Journey is therefore much more than a school excursion. It is an invitation to discover India through its people, places and stories, and to understand how different experiences contribute to a shared sense of belonging. When students step beyond the familiar, they return with a wider perspective and a richer understanding of the country they call home.
