The Importance Of Recitation In Studying English Literature

A recitation in general sense is the act of reciting from memory or a formal reading of a verse or other writings before an audience. Recitation actually means recreation of poems.

Recitation is one of the most important & effective modes of learning a language & appreciating a piece of literature. According to a famous educator, Wei Shusheng, “The sense of language has also been strengthened by reciting more”.

Poetry cannot leave a deep impression on the students till the time they will speak it correctly. Not only this, it also helps in generating self-confidence in the students.

In Europe, in a class of language teaching, reciting is one of the tools which is always used. Reciting also helps in raising the ability of students to solve problems & generating creativity. Memory is the storehouse of child’s mind. Nowadays, children are so creative and their dimensions of mind have been expanded so much, that we cannot even imagine.

But if the children are not well versed with the language how would they express their opinions, for this the improvement in the language skills of a child is a very vital aspect and it can be done through the process of recitation.

How Recitation helps a growing child?

  • Recitationhas its own rhythm, music, sounds & beats which are very much helpful for child’s language development, cognitive development & emotional development.
  • It helps the students to practice pitch, voice inflection & volume. Through this, a child can understand the words with different meaning but similar sounds.
  • They would also learn what a pattern is and how to recognize a particular pattern.

If a teacher follows the mode of recitation she can pass the ideological affiliation of a text more clearly which strengthens her teachings. It also helps in enhancing students interest in the topic as they can relate the same to their daily life experiences.

Although there are various advanced teaching methodologies which can be used recitation is the one which is mostly advocated vigorously for the overall development of a child.
