Education has redefined itself in the 21st century moving beyond the world of textbooks. The 4 Cs of Critical thinking, Communication, Collaboration and Creativity are the buzzwords for a 21st-century learner. This makes well- structures competition an integral part of school life to foster healthy learning. Here are 5 ways in which best practices of redesigned competition maximize learning among students.

Here are 5 Top Ways Competition Enhance Learning

  • Competition gives birth to Collaboration

A healthy competition leads to collaboration and teamwork. Many brains work together and churn out innovative propositions. The participants discover their strengths and strive collectively towards the attainment of the goal. This further leads to the establishment of a close bond full of mutual trust and respect.

Hellen Keller rightly remarked, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”

  • Platform for Social and Emotional Wisdom

Competitions make the competitors evolve. They learn to handle the risk involved in facing the situation. Academic competitions equip the students with soft skills of managing relationships, handling failure, conflicts and subjectivity for career success.

The educators, coaches and competition organizers must support the learners and ensure a conducive environment for a healthy development.

  • Increasing Intrinsic Motivation

Many feel that competitions cause worry and anxiety due to failure to achieve the desired goal. The external incentive in form of cash or kind gives immediate impetus. However, the intrinsic motivation is equally important because it gives the joy of participation. It adds a wider perspective to the way one looks at the competition. The intrinsic motivation provides an opportunity to explore, learn and maximize the potential.

Thus it becomes imperative to provide positive feedback to losers and motivate them to enhance their performance level.

To a layman, the idea of a competition is creating winners and losers. If we delve deep we find that research in social psychology has radically changed the belief. Dr. Carol Dewek, professor of Psychology advises that we must teach our children to love challenges and be intrigued by mistakes.

The competitions set a benchmark for us and act as driving force for expansion of our learning.

  • Building Mental Toughness

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

The challenges toughen the player’s spirit and build endurance, develop perseverance and resilience. The participants who are unsuccessful take the failure as a stepping stone to success. They gain experience through participation and become mentally prepared for future challenges of life.
