Beyond Textbooks: Exploring India Through Experiential Learning

BY ADMIN PUBLISHED October 7, 2026, UPDATED October 12, 2026

Should our classrooms necessarily be defined by its four walls? There are certain lessons that require the students to step out into the world and experience the unfamiliar. This is where experiential learning comes into play, and this whole premise blends into the idea of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat (EBSB). By encouraging students to meet & interact with new people across the Indian states, the programme aims at developing a greater understanding of India's diversity by means of interaction and experience.

A history lesson takes on a different meaning when students stand inside a centuries-old fort. Geography becomes easier to understand when they travel through the Himalayas, while conversations with local artisans and communities reveal how traditions continue to shape everyday life. At DPSG Meerut Road, the Educational Experiential Learning Journey under EBSB campaign brings learning into the real world through explorations of Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Each state offers a distinct perspective. In Rajasthan, the forts of Jaipur and Chittorgarh, the astronomical observatory at Jantar Mantar and the craft traditions of Udaipur connect students with history, engineering, science and art. Punjab introduces them to Sikh heritage, the freedom movement, agricultural innovation and industries such as textiles and sports goods through places including Anandpur Sahib, Ludhiana and Amritsar.

In Himachal Pradesh, the colonial landmarks of Shimla, the forests and orchards of Mashobra, the timber architecture of Manali and the landscapes of Solang Valley offer lessons in history, ecology, traditional construction and energy. Uttarakhand extends this learning to river conservation, forestry and wildlife. From the Ganga ghats of Haridwar and the yoga traditions of Rishikesh to the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun and the biodiversity of Jim Corbett National Park, students encounter the relationship between people and the natural environment.

The experiences gathered as a part of EBSB Campaign makes learning relevant across disciplines. Students can compare how different regions conserve resources, understand how geography influences livelihoods, and discover how communities preserve their cultural identities. Just as importantly, meeting unfamiliar environments and traditions encourages them to listen, observe and approach differences with curiosity.

This is the value of experiential learning: it transforms information into understanding. Instead of studying subjects in isolation, students begin to recognize how history, science, geography, culture and the economy intersect in the world around them. Through EBSB, the journey becomes an opportunity to appreciate India beyond familiar surroundings. Students return not only with memories of the places they have visited, but with a broader perspective on the country they share.

Meaningful education extends beyond preparing students for examinations. It prepares them to engage thoughtfully with the world, understand diverse communities and learn from experiences that stay with them long after the journey ends. Through EBSB, students discover India’s many cultures, histories and traditions, recognising how these differences enrich the nation while a shared sense of belonging brings its people together. The true purpose of experiential learning programmes like EBSB is to turn diversity from something students read about into something they experience, understand and value, discovering the many identities that make India unique, and the sense of oneness that binds them together.
